Syringoma
are benign (non-cancerous) skin tumors that derives from eccrine
cells, specialized cells that are related to sweat glands. They
occur more often in women than they do in men. Arising in puberty
or middle age and appear at all sites of the body.
They
may also be present over the cheeks
,axillae, abdomen, forehead, genitals, buttocks, scalp, and
dorsal aspects of the hands. There may be only one or a few
lesions in a localized area or numerous lesions covering a wide
area.
Syringoma
is characterised by numerous
papules . They present as 1-to-3 mm., skin-colored
or yellowish, small, dermal papules. Sometimes,
the lesions may appear translucent or cystic. The surface can be
rounded or flat-topped .
Syringomas develop slowly and persist indefinitely as
asymptomatic lesions. .
Clinically, syringomas on the face must be
distinguished from trichoepitheliomas and basal cell carcinomas..
Lesions on the eyelids may be confused with xanthelasma.
Syringoma
can be confused with cholesterol deposits on the eyelids. Taking a
skin biopsy shows the appearance under a microscope that they are
small ducts with comma-like tails resembling tadpoles in the skin.
Although syringoma represents a benign tumor of
skin appendage, multiple and diffuse facial lesions can cause
cosmetic problems for the affected individuals.
